Every 4th Thursday of the month, we host a community-led Solana validator call. The calls are open to anyone but for those of you who weren't able to join, we have a call recap of our October call.

Ongoing Efforts to Improve Runtime Performance
The Solana team continues its work on refining the validator runtime, with the goal of making the system more efficient and reducing memory usage. A significant update involves improvements to fork management, ensuring that validators can process forks more efficiently while using less memory. These changes are aimed at making the system lighter, which will benefit both large and small validators alike.
Publishing the GUI for Smaller Validators
An interesting question arose from one of the community members about publishing a GUI for their smaller Franklin Maine validator. The challenge they faced was in securing WebSocket connections with HTTPS, leading to browser errors. While a reverse proxy workaround was suggested, implementing full SSL support for the GUI isn’t currently a top priority for the team.
Testnet and Mainnet Version Updates
Solana is preparing for a significant update to the testnet, which will stay on version 2.0 while activating new feature gates. Version 2.1 is expected to roll out soon, with the goal of stabilizing the testnet before moving to the mainnet. An important part of this upgrade is enabling all validators to generate their own snapshots during network restarts, fostering self-sufficiency across the network.
Block Reward Distribution and Validator Economics
A major topic of debate was how to distribute block rewards among validators and stakers more equitably. The current discussion is centered around avoiding a “race to 0% commission,” which could harm small validators. Some community members expressed concerns that without adequate commissions, smaller operators might drop out, leading to further centralization of the network. Proposals to ensure fair distribution while maintaining network sustainability are still under review.
Technical Solana Conferences on the Horizon
The community hinted at a potential Solana conference in New York in mid-May 2025, though official announcements are yet to be made. Additionally, a validator-focused summit may take place in Munich at the end of September 2024, offering another opportunity for the community to collaborate and share insights.
Discord Bot Adjustments
Some community members raised issues with the Solana Discord bot being overly aggressive in removing users for innocuous behavior. This issue has been acknowledged, and adjustments are in the works to resolve it.
